PRESS RELEASE
AUGUSTA CITY LAKE
FISH SALVAGE
As part of the City of Augusta’s City Lake Spillway and Dam Project, the water in the lake will be pumped out late fall or early winter. In turn, the City also will need to address the fish population within the lake. The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has issued a Fish Salvage permit for the City Lake beginning on Saturday, October 15, 2011 and will remain in effect as long as the Permit Notice is posted on site. Please be advised that there is a blue-green algae warning in place at the Augusta City Lake. Under a blue-green algae warning, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment recommends that direct physical contact with the water source be restricted; lake water is not to be consumed; clean fish thoroughly and consume only the filet portions and in moderate proportions; properly discard all other parts of the fish; and restrict pets from having direct contact with the water or drinking lake water. Additional information pertaining to blue-green algae and associated risks can be obtained from KDHE at the following website: www.kdheks.gov/algae-illness/index.htm.
The provisions of the Fish Salvage are as follows:
· A state fishing license is still required during the Fish Salvage as required by State Law. The City of Augusta has waived the requirement of a City Fishing License during the timeframe of the Fish Salvage operation.
· Fishing limits as established by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism are waived during the Fish Salvage operation.
· Because of a blue-green algae warning at the City Lake, access to the lake will be limited to onshore fishing and from boats that meet the City’s regulations.
· Boat permits will be limited to residents of Butler County during the Fish Salvage. All boats shall be registered at the Public Safety Building prior to use on the lake and comply with the size and horsepower limitations as identified in the City’s Code of Ordinances. During the Fish Salvage, boat registration fees will be waived.
· In addition to a normal pole and line, netting devices may be used during the Fish Salvage. Netting devices shall not interfere with pole and line fishing from shore line or boats.
· All other rules and regulations identified in the City of Augusta’s Code of Ordinances under Chapter 12, Article 3 are in full force and effect and subject to enforcement.
· Participation in the City of Augusta’s Fish Salvage operation is a privilege. Violation of these provisions or actions such as littering, disposal of dead fish along the shoreline, etc. will be subject to revocation of this privilege and cause for further action.
Questions regarding the Fish Salvage operation can be directed to the City of Augusta at (316) 775-4510.
