PRESS RELEASE
October 14, 2011
AUGUSTA CITY LAKE
FISH SALVAGE
UPDATE
The City of Augusta has received notification from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment that the previously issued blue-green algae warning for the Augusta City Lake has been downgraded to an advisory level. This change in the status of the blue-green algae presence at the Augusta City Lake basically means that the algae is still present and there is still a risk but the level of the risk is not as great as it was two weeks ago. The KDHE Advisory still recommends that caution be used and that contact with the water is limited and should be avoided if at all possible. KDHE has also provided the following guidelines to be used as precautionary measures while participating in the City’s Fish Salvage operation that starts on October 15, 2011.
- Because of the presence of Harmful Algal Blooms in the Augusta City Lake, it is recommended that any fish from the lake be eaten in moderation.
- Avoid eating the guts and skin of the fish, where accumulation of toxins may be the greatest. Consume only the filet portions of the fish.
- Take care not to cut into the organs when filleting the fish. Rinse the fillets with clean water, not lake water, before cooking or freezing the fish.
- Limit contact with the lake water. If you get lake water in your eyes, on your hands, arms or other body parts, rinse immediately with fresh water, not lake water. Also rinse with fresh water after handling fish from the lake.
- Please remember to take appropriate safety precautions for pets including limiting exposure to lake water and avoiding ingestion of the water. Remember to rinse your pets with fresh water if they have been in the lake.
The provisions of the Fish Salvage have not changed from what has been previously published. Additional information regarding blue-green algae can be obtained from KDHE at the following website: www.kdheks.gov/algae-illness/index.htm.
Questions regarding the Fish Salvage Operation can be directed to the City of Augusta at (316) 775-4510.
