PRESS RELEASE
NOVEMBER 16, 2011
AUGUSTA CITY LAKE
FISH SALVAGE

The City of Augusta began to lower the water levels in the City Lake on November 15th in preparation of the Lake Spillway and Dam Project. This process will begin through using available water for our potable water supply until such time that water can no longer be taken through the inlet structure for this purpose.   The project contractor will also begin working on removal of the balance of the water through various means including pumping water over the dam. The goal is to have this process completed by mid-December at the earliest.  Further updates will be forthcoming as this process moves forward.

The Fish Salvage permit from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism remains in effect as long as the Permit Notice is posted on site.   The Kansas Department of Health and Environment recently removed the Blue-Green Algae Advisory and therefore cleared the City Lake from any potential hazards from contact with the water. In turn, this enhances opportunities to expand options to assist with the removal of fish as part of the Salvage operation. KDHE still recommends that all fish be cleaned thoroughly and that only the fillet portions are consumed.

The provisions of the Fish Salvage are as follows:

·         A state fishing license is still required during the Fish Salvage as required by State Law. The City of Augusta has waived the requirement of a City Fishing License during the timeframe of the Fish Salvage operation.
·         Fishing limits as established by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism are waived during the Fish Salvage operation.
·         Boat permits will be limited to residents of Butler County during the Fish Salvage. All boats shall be registered at the Public Safety Building prior to use on the lake and must comply with the size and horsepower limitations as indentified in the City’s Code of Ordinances.   During the Fish Salvage, boat registration fees will be waived.
·         With the exception of electric shock, explosives and bow fishing, all other reasonable and safe means to remove the fish may be used during the Fish Salvage.   This would include the use of seines, jug lines and drag lines.    Jug lines must be attended at all times.
·         All other rules and regulations identified in the City of Augusta’s Code of Ordinances under Chapter 12, Article 3 remain in effect and subject to enforcement.
·         Participation in the City of Augusta’s Fish Salvage operation is a privilege. Violation of these provisions or actions such as littering, disposal of dead fish along shoreline, etc., will be subject to revocation of this privilege and cause for further action.
