Special One percent (1%) Sales Tax Election

Is this a new tax?
No.  The City currently has in place a one percent (1.0%) city-wide retailers sales tax that is set to expire on October 1, 2011.  Approval of this ballot measure basically extends the existing sales tax for an additional five years.

How much would the tax generate?
Historically, the one percent sales tax has generated roughly $1 million per year for the City of Augusta.  However, based on existing economic conditions and anticipated reductions in retail sales, the City is expecting to collect closer to $850,000 per year going forward.

When would the sales tax expire?
If the proposed ballot measure is approved, the new expiration date on the City's one percent sales tax will be September 30, 2016.
