National Weather Service Issues Winter Storm Watch for Area Including Augusta

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for an area that includes Augusta to last from this Tuesday night through early Thursday morning.  They are predicting two rounds of heavy snowfall on Wednesday, with a chance for 3-5 inches of snow to accumulate during the day and another 3-6 inches to accumulate in the evening.  For more information about the forecasted weather pattern, please read this Facebook post from Butler County Emergency Management.

Beginning Tuesday, February 1st, the Community Development Department – Street Division will have a partial crew working from 7:00am – 7:00pm. From 7:00pm to 7:00am, a three-man crew will report to work and will focus on clearing emergency snow routes and bridges/overpasses during the overnight hours. At 7:00am on Wednesday, February 2nd, crews from Streets, Parks, Solid Waste, and other divisions as deemed necessary will work to clear streets during the day. Snow removal will be focused on the emergency snow routes and bridges/overpasses. After the storm has passed and the emergency snow routes and bridges/overpasses are cleared, crews will move to other areas of town as resources are available. During snow removal operations, please give snow plows enough room to work and maneuver. We will be spreading a salt/sand mixture, and sand can bounce off the street and break car windows. Since the storm is currently expected to begin as a rain event, we will not pre-treat the streets with brine.

Personal drives and vehicles parked on city streets may become blocked by snow during plowing operations. It is the property owner’s responsibility to clear their driveway and gain access to the city street. City Code specifies that snow removed from driveways and sidewalks of private property should be placed on unpaved right-of-way or on an individual’s property.  Snow should NOT in any circumstance be pushed into the street.  If citizens can avoid parking on city streets during the storm, you are encouraged to do so. We ask for your patience as crews will be working around the clock to make sure Augusta’s streets are as safe as possible. Adjustments will be made as needed in our response to the changing weather conditions.
